The Alliance for Progress Charter School (APCS)
was founded in 1998 by the Women’s Christian
Alliance to provide equal learning opportunities
for children from underserved, north central
Philadelphia communities. APCS provides
knowledgeable and experienced teachers, in a
safe, challenging and caring classroom
environment, for students in grades K through 5.

The
six (6) guiding principles of APCS are high
expectations, a holistic environment, integrated
learning, active learning, positive attitudes,
and varied assessments.
APCS
offers academic and non-academic goals and objectives.
Through its academic goals there is a commitment
to empower students to learn by fostering their
development as independent thinkers; enable
students to develop their ability to master
subject matters and achieve academically; generate
a love of learning in all subject areas including
science, mathematics and family life education;
foster an awareness of the behaviors, skills
and attitudes that help individuals within a
family unit develop healthy interpersonal relationships;
be positive contributors to the community in
which they reside and use technology as a tool
for learning and for teaching.
APCS
non-academic objectives include establishing
moral virtues including integrity, kindness,
courage, responsibility, self-respect and respect
for others as the basic underpinnings of the
school; creating an environment that emphasizes
adventure, enthusiasm, a joy of learning and
life, a hunger for the truth, self-discipline
and perseverance; encouraging students to identify
and acquire needed information, working together
to accomplish task, manage limited resources
and employ a variety of technological tools.
APCS
operates during the school year, from 8:00 a.m.
to 3:00 p.m., for required academic instruction
and 3:00 pm. to 6:00 p.m. for enrichment activities
for children and educational programs for parents.
Students
of APCS are selected through a combination of
interviews and lottery. The lottery ensures
that all students are given equal access to
places in school regardless of their family’s
educational background, economic resources or
place of residence within the community. APCS
admits students regardless of race, color, national
and ethnic origins, and all rights, privileges,
programs and activities are made available to
students.
APCS
does not discriminate based on mental or physical
ability, proficiency in English, prior academic
achievement or other characteristics.
